Willow - Year 1/2

 

Welcome to Willow Class.

 

In Willow Class our teachers are Miss Peake and Mrs Dykes (until 10:30am each morning)  and our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Williams. Mrs Houghton works in our class every Thursday afternoon. Miss Wright will look after us at lunch time.

 

We are looking forward to our Spring term. We will be learning about...

 

Phonics - We will continue our phonics scheme, Little Wandle, and we will have daily phonics sessions using this scheme.  We will continue to practise reading and spelling our tricky words. During our guided reading sessions we will practise our decoding, expression and comprehension skills.

 

English - We will be learning about Pirates in our first half term and sharing some stories by Johnny Duddle. We will then write some instructions for making a pirate hat and a pirate sandwich! After half term we will share some Traditional Tales and some tales with a twist. We will read Little Red Riding Hood and then the twisted tale - Little Red Reading Hood. We will then write our own version of the story.

 

Maths -  We will be continue to follow the Red Rose Maths Scheme. Our units for this term include Place Value, measuring length, addition and subtraction, halving and doubling and shape. We will also have our Mastering number session each morning.

 

Science: Children in both Y1 and Y2 will be learning about materials during the first half term and Plants during the second half term. We will explore the properties of a range of materials and consider the best materials for certain jobs. When learning about plants the children in Y1 will learn the names of wild and garden plants and trees. Y2 will investigate the best conditions for germination and growth.

 

History: After the half term break will be learning about Leroy Constantine, a Lancashire cricketer.

 

Geography: In the first half term we will be learning about an area of Borneo, comparing the landscape and weather patterns to those in the UK.

 

Religion: We will be learning about the importance of prayer and routine to Muslims and after half term we will learn the names and purpose of the different parts of a church. During the second half term we will visit Christ Church to see the inside of the church and to complete some Easter themed activities. 

 

Music: Children in Year 2 will be learning to play the descant recorder. Children in Year 1 will be exploring sound, learning new songs and playing the glockenspiel.

 

PSHE: We will start the half term discussing how to keep healthy and safe.

 

PE: Our PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays. During the first half term we will be learning a pirate dance on Thursdays and practising our hopping, skipping and side stepping on Wednesdays. The children can come to school dressed in their PE kits on these days.
