Hazel Class - Year 5
Welcome to Class Hazel
Welcome to Class Hazel
Welcome to Class Hazel! Our teacher is Mrs McManus and on a Friday we have Mrs Houghton. We get TA support from Mrs Beveridge.
Being in Y5 means that we are now in the Upper Juniors. We are also expected to put 100% into every piece of work we do and be excellent role models.
We are looking forward to an exciting term. We will be very busy starting our Year 5 Autumn topics, our main topic being World War 2.
Here is a summary of the work we will be completing this half term:
Literacy: For the next 3 weeks we are looking at Stories With Historical Settings where we will be studying Nina Bawden's "Carrie's War". We will also be going onto study Explanation texts where we will look at the language writers use to explain a topic before going on to write our own Explanation Text.
We will read independently in school every day. We will also be reading as a class in Literacy lessons and in whole class Guided Reading sessions. During Guided Reading we will be reading non-fiction books about various topics as well as descriptive excerpts from texts by well-known authors to support our Reading skills and our ability to answer comprehension questions. We will also be working on our grammar and spellings and independently reading our own books from the class library. We will also be reading a book of our choice at home.
Numeracy: We will start the term by recapping on counting in multiples of 6,7,8,25 and 1000 and counting backwards through 0 (negative numbers). We will be doing Mental Starter Challenges and throughout the year, there will be a big emphasis on x tables and mental arithmetic.
History: WW2 - Why people wore gas masks, how people protected themselves during the Blitz and what life was like for an evacuee.
Art: Creating their own WW2 drawings based on famous WW2 images.
Science: Our topic for this half term is 'Properties and Changes of Materials'.
R.E.: Christianity - God.
P.E/Games: On Friday we will be working on the hockey unit 'Quicksticks' before moving onto Tag Rugby. Children should ensure they come to school wearing their full, named PE kit (pumps/trainers, shorts, T-shirt and tracksuit as we will be outside) so they can participate fully. (The children will also come home wearing their PE kit, so there will be no need for the children to get changed in school).
Our important things to remember
Homework: Given out on Friday -
Literacy: to be completed online (Rising Stars) by Wednesday.
Numeracy: to be completed online (MathsWatch) by Wednesday. & TT Rockstars.
Spellings: Online weekly Spellings homework set (SpellingFrame) to prepare for spelling test on Friday. (To be completed by Wednesday to prepare for Spelling Test on Friday).
There will also be a quick times tables test on a Friday.
Make sure you continue reading a book of your choice at home for at least 5 minutes every day as this makes you an even more amazing reader!
Finally, congratulations everybody on joining the Upper Juniors!
