Welcome to Aughton Town Green Primary School Only My Best Is Good Enough For Me

Hazel Class - Year 5

Welcome to Class M

Welcome to Class M! Our teacher is Mrs McManus and we get TA support from Mrs Beveridge.

Being in Y5 means we have the opportunity to carry out the responsible role of Play-leader. We are also expected to put 100% into every piece of work we do and be excellent role models.

We have made a great start to the term. We have been very busy starting our Year 5 Autumn topics and we are looking forward to our first term in the Upper Juniors.

Here is a summary of the work we will be completing this half term:

Literacy: For the next 2 weeks we are looking at Films & Playscript through Cornelia Funke's 'Inkheart'.  We will also be going onto study Charles Dicken's 'Oliver Twist' before preparing our own 'Oliver' script to perform in front of the class.

We read every day. Sometimes we read independently and other times we work with Mrs McManus or Mrs Beveridge in a Guided Reading group. In Guided Reading this term, we will start off by reading playscripts about topics such as Space and autobiographical texts by authors such as Anne Frank and Roald Dahl before moving on to different texts in a few weeks time. We will also be working on our comprehension, grammar and spellings and independently reading our own books either from the class library, or from home.

Numeracy: We have started the term by recapping on place value and counting forwards and backwards in steps of powers of 10.  We are also enjoying our Mental Starter Challenges. Throughout the year, there will be a big emphasis on x tables and mental arithmetic.

History: The Vikings & Anglo Saxons - understanding the terms 'invaders' and 'settlers', placing Viking events on a timeline,  what daily life was like in Viking times, common Anglo-Saxon words,  Anglo-Saxon religion and beliefs and the mystery of Sutton Hoo.

Art:  Viking Art- Learning how to make a Viking brooch from clay,  producing our own Viking shield designs/accurately reproducing popular Viking designs and making a Viking house from cardboard and lollysticks.

Science: Our topics for this half term are 'Electricity'.

R.E.: Christianity - The Church (looking at where we can find guidance).

P.E/Games: On Monday we will be working on Outdoor Adventurous Activities. On Friday we will be working on Dance. Children should ensure they have their full PE kit (pumps/trainers, shorts, T-shirt and tracksuit as we will be outside on the field) in school all week so they can participate fully. (If trainers are brought home, remind children to bring them back into school again the next day).

Our important things to remember

Homework: Given out on Friday - Literacy and Numeracy to be completed and returned by Tuesday.

Weekly Times Tables to learn will be in Reading Record Book. They will be tested on this on a Friday.

Spellings: Spelling Focus given out Monday - test every Friday morning.

Make sure you take your Reading Record Book home to record your daily home-reading and bring your Reading Record Book back into school with you EVERY DAY to record your reading progress!

Finally, congratulations everybody on becoming part if the Upper Juniors!
