Hazel Class - Year 5
Welcome to Class M
Welcome to Class M! Our teacher is Mrs McManus and we get TA support from Mrs Beveridge.
Being in Y5 means we have the opportunity to carry out the responsible role of Play-leader. We are also expected to put 100% into every piece of work we do and be excellent role models.
We have made a great start to the term. We have been very busy starting our Year 5 Spring topics and we are looking forward to our second term in the Upper Juniors.
Here is a summary of the work we will be completing this half term:
Literacy: For the next 2 weeks we are looking at Persuasive Writing where we will learn how writers use persuasive language to get us to agree with their point of view. We will also be going onto study Roald Dahl's autobiography 'Boy' before preparing our own biography about this writer.
We read every day. Sometimes we read independently and other times we work with Mrs McManus or Mrs Beveridge in a Guided Reading group. In Guided Reading this term, we will start off by reading non-fiction books about topics such as Space and descriptive excerpts from texts by Roald Dahl to support our upcoming Literacy unit on Dahl. We will also be working on our comprehension, grammar and spellings and independently reading our own books either from the class library, or from home.
Numeracy: We have started the term by recapping on negative numbers and counting forwards and backwards through 0. We are also enjoying our Mental Starter Challenges. Throughout the year, there will be a big emphasis on x tables and mental arithmetic.
History: Ancient Egypt - understanding where Egypt is, when the Ancient Egyptians lived, what the roles of the different seasons and the River Nile had in Ancient Egypt, what the Ancient Egyptian social pyramid was and why the Ancient Egyptians built pyramids.
Art: Egyptian Art- Learning how to produce their name in hieroglyphics, studying Egyptian art and emulating Egyptian poses in their own art work.
Science: Our topic for this half term is 'Earth & Space'.
R.E.: Islam - Where can people find guidance?
P.E/Games: On Friday we will be working on the hockey unit 'Quicksticks' before moving onto Tag Rugby. Children should ensure they have their full, named PE kit (pumps/trainers, shorts, T-shirt and tracksuit as we will be outside) in school all week so they can participate fully. (If trainers are brought home, remind children to bring them back into school again the next day).
Our important things to remember
Homework: Given out on Friday - Literacy to be completed and returned by Tuesday. Numeracy to be completed online by Thursday. Online Phonics homework set on Monday to prepare for spelling test on Friday.
Weekly Times Tables to learn will be in Reading Record Book. They will be tested on this on a Friday.
Spellings: Spelling Focus given out Friday - test every following Friday morning.
Make sure you take your Reading Record Book home to record your daily home-reading and bring your Reading Record Book back into school with you EVERY DAY to record your reading challenge progress!
Finally, congratulations everybody on completing your first term in the Upper Juniors!
